Christmas Fireplace Mantel Garland Pattern- Free
This is a free version of my Christmas Fireplace Mantel Garland Pattern.
The Garland is completely customizable to your Manteland your preferences; you can make it as long or short as desired. Follow the measure-yourself instructions on this page to make a custom garland that fits your needs.
For this design, I was inspired while staring at my empty fireplace mantel in my new home. Earlier in the day I decided to pull out christmas decorations early since the previous year I didn't get to decorate or have the joy that I usually get from decorating for Christmas since I had to pack up my old home and move in December. My lack of decorations was driving me crazy, and the empty mantel was making it even worse! I decided to make a simple bow garland that worked up quick to fill the space.
Yarn:
For the Yarn, I used Red Heart Super Saver Yarn in the color Cherry, Hunter, and White as the colors. I chose this yarn because it was easily on hand (Walmart 10 minutes away versus Michaels/Hobby Lobby 1 hour + away). Details about this yarn:
Weight: Medium (4)
Contents: 100% acrylic
Skein Weight: 7oz / 198g
Yardage: 364 yd/ 333 m
Click Here to purchase this yarn. This yarn retails at $3.77 per skein a Walmart.
Skill Level:
I consider this to be a beginner level crochet pattern as it contains great Stitches to learn as a beginner, Chain and Double Crochet
Materials & Measurements:
For this pattern, you’ll need yarn, a crochet hook, stitch markers, scissors, and a yarn needle for weaving in ends and attaching the pieces.
This pattern will be made using the yarn/hook of your choice and constructed specifically to fit your mantel. For my garland, I used a 5 mm hook. This pattern works best with medium or light weight yarn.
My bows ended up being approximately 6in w × 5 in h, but the finished product may vary due to yarn stretch. My mantel is about 68.5 inches wide.
Key:
ST/STS: Stitch/Stitches
CH: Chain
DC: Double Crochet
FO: Fasten Off
Notes:
This is a beginner level crochet pattern
Pattern is written in US crochet terms
The CH 1 at the beginning of each row does not count as a stitch.
If you are using stitch markers, I recommend placing your stitch markers is the stitch prior to CH 1.
Pattern Structure:
This pattern is broken down into two sections: Ribbon and Bow
Ribbon:
MAKE ENOUGH TO FIT YOUR MANTEL. My mantel only needed 12 bows
CH 91, or however many you wish, If you want smaller bows, chain less, larger chain more. I always recommend chaining an odd number of chain so the count is an even number when working the rows.
ROW 1: DC into the second chain from the hook, and DC to the end (90).
ROW 2: I didn't want my bows to be very wide so I completed each bow after one row, but if you wish for your bows fo be wider, continue with ROW 2: CH 1, turn, DC to end (90).
ROW 3 +: Repeat row 2 as manh times as desired, FO when you reach the width you like.
Bow Assembly:
Starting Bow:
STEP 1:
Take a length of ribbon and make two “bunny ears”, leaving a tail at each end.
STEP 2:
Make a cross with the bunny ears.
STEP 3:
Wrap the top bunny ear behind and poke through the loop at the bottom.
STEP 4:
Pull the bunny ears tight to form a bow.
For the bows added on after the first:
Before doing the first step, feed the Ribbon of the next bow through the right bunny ear of the previous bow and complete the steps the same. The bows may need a little adjusting to correct any uneveness, but handmade items aren't always perfect!
After tying together all of your bows, don't forget to weave in all of the ends and block the bow tails to prevent them from curling! I did this after because it was easier for me to do this while it was hanging up. Instead of traditionally blocking my ends, I used a steamer on a low setting to loosen the acrylic yarn quick.
I'm super happy with how my decoration looks hanging and I will have new projects posted soon!
Have fun crocheting and Happy Holidays! 🧶🫶
